converting real audio to MP3

hi all, I'm trying to convert real audio to mp3. I've found some programs to do it, but they all seem to rerecord the sound as mp3 while playing. This results in jaws being recorded as well. I found one that seemed like it would work, but it kept saying there was an error. It was called "RM to MP3 Convert" I believe.
any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
